The American Violence podcast examines the long-running saga of conflict in America, from the birth of the republic to current-day protests and battles over police brutality and racism. The author’s work draws from his research for recent books and expands on it, uncovering the role violence has played at key points in American history, and not only during wartime. These episodes include the frontier battles with Native Americans, the sporadic riots that followed in the wake of the Great Awakening and other religious transformations, the repeated turmoil between labor unions and industrial corporations, and the clash between abolitionists and civil rights campaigners against the forces of slavery and segregation. Indeed, throughout most of the country’s history, violent conflict has been endemic to the republic — whether to promote social change or prevent it.

J.D. Dickey has also been a semifinalist for the prestigious Nicholl Fellowships, and his short films have been featured at such venues as the Williamsburg Independent Film Festival, Magnolia Independent Film Festival and Beloit International Film Festival.
